Caring for your grillz through a Sydney summer
Take your grillz out before swimming at the beach or in the pool, rinse and dry them after every wear, and give your own teeth a thorough clean separately each day. Sydney's heat, saltwater and sunscreen residue all add up over summer, but a couple of minutes of regular care protects both the metal finish and your natural teeth.
Why summer is harder on grillz
Grillz sit directly against your teeth and gums for hours at a time, picking up saliva, food particles and plaque the way any surface in the mouth does. Over a Sydney summer, that's compounded by saltwater, chlorine, sunscreen and the extra humidity — all of which can dull metal and cloud stones faster than in cooler months. None of this takes long to prevent — it just needs to be regular.
Before the beach or pool
Take your grillz out before you get in the water, every time.
- Swimming or showering in your grillz exposes the metal to saltwater and chlorine, which aren't good for the finish over repeated exposure.
- Store the set somewhere dry rather than in a damp beach bag — a hard case keeps sand and grit off the metal.
- Rinse with fresh water as soon as you're back from the beach, even if you didn't swim, since sea air alone leaves a salty residue.
Daily cleaning routine
The basics are the same whatever metal or stones your set has.
- Rinse your grillz with lukewarm water as soon as you take them out.
- Brush gently with a soft-bristled toothbrush — a spare one kept just for this is ideal — using plain water or a small amount of mild, non-abrasive soap.
- Avoid toothpaste on the metal itself; most toothpastes contain mild abrasives that are fine for tooth enamel but will dull a polished or plated surface over time.
- Dry thoroughly with a soft cloth before putting your set away — storing it damp encourages tarnish and bacteria, which happens faster in Sydney's humid months.
- Clean your own teeth and gums separately and thoroughly, exactly as you normally would, including when you're wearing your grillz less often.
Stone-set grillz need a little extra care
Moissanite and diamond are both hard stones and resist scratching well, but the metal settings holding them in place are more delicate than plain metal. Avoid anything abrasive near the stones, and if you ever notice a stone feels loose, stop wearing that piece and get in touch rather than continuing to wear it — a loose stone can be reset, but a lost one can't always be replaced to match exactly.
When to get in touch
If the fit starts to feel loose, a stone works its way free, or the metal shows wear you're unsure about, message us rather than trying to adjust it yourself. We'd always rather look at a set early than have someone keep wearing something that no longer fits properly.
Questions people ask
Can I wear grillz to the beach in Sydney?
You can wear them to the beach, but take them out before swimming — saltwater and sand aren't good for the finish or the fit over repeated exposure.
Can I use toothpaste to clean my grillz?
It's best avoided on the metal — most toothpastes contain mild abrasives that will dull a polished finish over time. Plain lukewarm water and a soft brush is enough for day-to-day cleaning.
Does Sydney's humidity affect how often I should clean my grillz?
It can — damp, humid conditions encourage tarnish faster than dry ones, so drying your set thoroughly before storing it matters more over summer.
